Durham University Engineering Placement - 2021

Working at FINBOURNE is fast paced and exciting. Our Engineers spend their days supporting and expanding the build process to make it bullet proof. They are given the time and space to solve problems properly, not to an arbitrary deadline. They decide what, how and when is the best way for them to work, rather than have that dictated to them from above.

FINBOURNE Technology was founded in 2016 with the mission to reduce the cost of investing and increase transparency for everyone. We’re doing this by changing the way the world manages investment data with LUSID, our open cloud-based investment data platform and marketplace. LUSID is for everyone in the asset management industry from start-up fund managers to global investment institutions.

7 of us started on this journey and we have now grown to more than 90 people. We’ve taken best practice from the b2c technology world and applied this to a b2b technology world currently stuck on old legacy systems with limitations and lengthy implementation periods. What this means is that LUSID is open, API first and developer friendly – a true first for the asset management industry. You can see what our team is busy building – we’ve published APIs for all functions publicly, and released Software Development Kits for developers in four languages (C#, Java, Javascript, Python) on Github.

With strong funding behind us and an expanding customer base, we have ambitious growth plans to become the de -facto industry standard for hosting the world’s investment data. To help us build our open system where individuals and institutions own their own data, we’re looking for talented and creative problem solvers to join our team. We think it’s a pretty exciting place to be right now and we’re always looking for passionate, innovative people to join us on our journey.

Job title: Engineering Placement
Location: London, UK
Salary: £38,000 pro rata
Closing date for applications: 31st July 2021

Length: 41 weeks (September 2021 to July 2022; we can be flexible on dates)

FINBOURNE is offering two Engineering placements to Durham students for 2021. This is an exciting opportunity for undergraduates to see first-hand how we build capability in our LUSID platform.

Our placement is aimed at giving you exposure across our entire business. Although this is constantly evolving, the typical tasks you will be involved with range from helping to develop our APIs and build high performance and scalable distributed systems to helping us ensure everything we do is robust and reliable.

Technologically you will gain exposure to C# (.NET Core 2.1), NUnit, Moq, PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Linux, Angular 6, Redis and possibly a bit of Python and even some Go! We will also provide training sessions to give you an overview of the Financial Services industry, Investments and Asset Management and further insight into our business and product.

How we will support you:

  • You will be working with highly experienced developers who will provide training and mentoring for you. These individuals have spent their careers at some of the most prestigious financial technology institutions and are eager to share their experience.
  • You will have a weekly meeting with your assigned mentor to receive feedback from them and to also give you the opportunity to ask additional questions.
  • You will be invited to regular knowledge sharing sessions and discussions on best practice in coding and finance.
  • Access to a network of colleagues who are happy to answer your questions and explain answers in detail.

What we are looking for:

  • We are looking for candidates who are genuinely passionate and curious to continue learning, and those who are driven to solve tough technological problems and apply critical thinking to their work.
  • Additionally, we are looking for candidates who display strong communication skills and who feel comfortable working in an informal, agile environment.
  • Ideally you will have some experience programming and be studying a STEM subject.

You will be in your penultimate year of undergraduate studies. Throughout the placement you will be assessed with the view to being made a permanent job offer once you graduate.

We have been delighted to offer a number of internships to students over the past few years. Here is what Martin Winchester a student from Trinty College Dublin had to say about his time at FINBOURNE in 2020:

“During my internship with FINBOURNE I had the opportunity of gaining real insight into the world of professional engineering, writing production code used by real customers. Helped by an open and collaborative company culture I was given all the support I needed to become a part of the team and start adding value from day-one. I learned a lot, and had a great time doing it.”

Application Process:

To apply please submit a copy of your CV via our Careers Page.

Shortlisted applicants will then be sent an online technical test and will be interviewed by a cross section of the team.

Whilst we are currently all working from home due to COVID-19, we will continue to monitor government guidelines and plan to move into brand new offices based in the City of London shortly.

Whilst FINBOURNE will not be offering accommodation as part of this placement, we are very happy to provide advice on where to find temporary accommodation in London if this is required.

In case of questions or queries, please contact lucy.ayres@finbourne.com

We are also looking to hire Graduates in 2022 and 2023; applications for our 2022 Graduate scheme will open in September 2021 so please keep an eye on our Careers Page for more details.
